About The Chew and Chelten Community Development Corporation
Our mission is to improve and sustain the well-being of the East Germantown community by cultivating a safe environment, building community power through collective action, enhancing the visual appeal and productive use of land and property, promoting homeownership and local business development, and putting culture, creativity, and healing at the center of everything we do.
About Yo! Put the Gun Down: Performance & Outreach Program
Yo! Put the Gun Down is an anti-gun violence musical theatre and outreach program that uses performance art and art therapy to create a safe and inclusive space for our community's vulnerable youth to heal from the trauma of gun violence. This creative and social change platform is a culturally relevant tool that promotes socially conscious theatre and lifestyle as a means for healing for our community. The program offers mentorship, personal and professional development, mental health resources, and career opportunities that evoke a necessary change in the East Germantown community and beyond.
About Yo! Put the Gun Down (A Hip Hop Symphony)
The emotional and inspiring Hip Hop Musical takes you into the prison cell of inmate Thelonious Sr., as he tells us his ongoing story about gun violence, while serving a life term for a murder he committed when he was just 19. Through spoken word, hip-hop dance, music and string quartet we share in his own son's struggle, choosing between his obligation to be a young father at 17, and the urgent plea from the street life to murder another youth over an escalating Instagram dispute that will play itself out on an unknown street in Philadelphia.
